Employment Discrimination

Federal and State laws mandate that employers provide equal employment opportunities to individuals in the workplace. It is an unlawful employment practice for employers to discriminate against individuals based on their age, gender, race, color, national origin, disability or religion with respect to hiring, termination, compensation, promotion, classification, training, apprenticeship, referral for employment, or other terms, conditions and privileges of employment. In spite of these laws, there are many victims of discrimination. In 2007, there were more than 80,000 discrimination and retaliation charges filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, up by more than 7,000 charges filed in 2006. The monetary benefits paid to victims of discrimination, in 2007, was $345 million.
